Stamps go Sky High for Matariki

New Zealand 's night sky has been captured in a new stamp issue that celebrates five distinctive constellations.

The Southern Skies stamp series was developed by New Zealand Post with the help of the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand and the University of Canterbury 's Peter Cottrell. The stamp issue features the best of our night sky stars.

The stamps will be launched in June, the same time as Matariki or Pleiades rises to herald the start of the Maori New Year.

New Zealand Post Stamps general manager Ivor Masters says the stamp issue is a great chance to share New Zealand 's night sky with the rest of the world.

"These are iconic constellations - every New Zealander knows where to find the Southern Cross at night, while Matariki is one of the most important lunar events on our calendar."

The Southern Cross features on the 50 cent stamp while Matariki is depicted on the new $1.00 stamp.

Three other constellations, the Trifid Nebula ($1.50 stamp), the Southern Pinwheel ($2.00 stamp) and the Large Magellanic Cloud ($2.50 stamp) are also included in the series.

Each star is depicted with a different telescope from a range of observatories that are in New Zealand or New Zealanders have a stake it (such as the Southern African Large Telescope or SALT)..

Southern African Large Telescope is the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere. It can record distant stars, galaxies and quasars a billion times too faint to be seen with the unaided eye - as faint as a candle flame at the distance of the moon. SALT was completed in 2005, funded by a consortium of international partners from South Africa, the United States, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

The products  available from PostShops, New Zealand Post's Real Aotearoa shops in Auckland and Christchurch, selected retailers, the Collectables and Solutions Centre and the New Zealand Post stamps website , www.nzpost.co.nz/stamps and www.nzpost.co.nz/coins from June 6 2007.
